What to know about Alabama and Kalen DeBoerâs new offensive staff
New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has been hard at work over the two weeks since his hiring to replace the retired Nick Saban. One of his first orders of business was to get a staff together.
The staff hasn’t been fully announced yet, but most members have updated their social media accounts with their new position. DeBoer still has one defensive position left to fill, but the offensive staff appears to be set.
Here’s what to know about each of the Tide’s offensive on-field assistants.
Ryan Grubb
Grubb has followed DeBoer through the coaching ranks. He helped build the Washington offense into one of the nation’s best, with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. becoming one of the top QBS in college football, finishing as a finalist the the Heisman Trophy.
He was a candidate for the Washington head coach job after DeBoer’s departure, but did not get the job, he announced on Saturday. Instead, he headed to Tuscaloosa, where he’ll fill the job formerly held by Tommy Rees. A year after being a highly sought out candidate for this exact job, Grubb is finally with the Tide.
Before he went to Washington with DeBoer, Grubb coached with Alabama’s new head coach at Fresno State as offensive coordinator. He also worked with DeBoer at Eastern Michigan and Sioux Falls.
JaMarcus Shephard
Shephard will coach Alabama’s wide receivers under Grubb and DeBoer. He served in the same role at Washington.
The Huskies had an excellent wideouts group under Shephard, led by Rome Odunze, who was a consensus all-American in 2023. Odunze declared for the NFL Draft.
Shephard joined Washington, where he was also an associate head coach and passing game coordinator, in 2022, after prior stops at Purdue, Washington State and Western Kentucky.
Scott Huff
Offensive line was a problem for Alabama at times in 2023. Huff certainly has the potential to help fix those issues.
Washington’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award this past season, as the nation’s best. Penix dealt with injury issues throughout his career, but in his final season, the Huskies were able to keep him clean to make a run to the CFP.
Huff had coached at Washington since 2017, having been retained by DeBoer after his hiring on Montlake. Before UW, he worked at Boise State for 12 seasons.
Nick Sheridan
Sheridan will coach Alabama’s tight ends, just as he did at Washington. He joined DeBoer’s staff in 2022.
He had previously worked with his boss at Indiana, where he started coaching quarterbacks in 2017, then moved to tight ends in 2019 before serving as co-offensive coordinator and QBs coach in 2020 and 2021.
Sheridan also coached at South Florida and Western Kentucky under Willie Taggart.
Robert Gillespie
The lone holdover from Saban’s offensive staff is Gillespie, who has been at Alabama since before the 2022 season. He’ll continue to coach running backs for the Crimson Tide.
Gillespie is an excellent recruiter for Alabama. He has loads of SEC experience, having coached at South Carolina and Tennessee and played his college football at Florida.
Before joining the Crimson Tide, Gillespie was coaching running backs at North Carolina.
